17 December 2013: Star gay and lesbian athletes and activists for LGBT and intersex rights came together to join forces for equality at an event called “Sport Comes Out Against Homophobia” on 10 December 2013 at the UN Headquarters in New York. They share moving stories of their experiences and how they hold out hope that the world can change. Speakers include UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Šimonović, tennis star Martina Navratilova, NBA player Jason Collins, South African activist Thandeka Mkhuma, U.S. intersex activist Hida Viloria, and Russian activist Anastasia Smirnova. Watch world leaders come together – to make LGBT history
30 September 2013: On 26 September 2013, leaders from the UN’s core group of countries working to end violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people met in New York for the first-ever ministerial meeting at the UN on LGBT rights and issued an historic Ministerial Declaration on Ending Violence and Discrimination against Individuals Based on their Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. The declaration was endorsed by the U.S. Secretary of State, the foreign ministers of Argentina, Brazil, Croatia, El Salvador, France, Israel, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway, and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union.

Ever wonder how the LGBT rights debate started at the UN?
27 July 2011: UN human rights chief Navi Pillay looks back at the evolution of the gay rights debate at the United Nations. International law requires States to eliminate discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, and to protect everyone from violent hate crimes. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is just that, the High Commissioner says: it is universal and applies to us all — whoever we are, whatever we look like, whoever we share our lives with.
